چکیده

Bandgap modulation of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) can be achieved by encapsulation of metallofullerenes, covalent functionalization or changing the tube aggregation states. Another attractive idea is to dope SWCNTs by adding electron donors or acceptors since it allows us to control their electronic states without generating defects in the SWCNT bonding structures. Reversible doping in SWCNTs has been reported by utilizing either chemical dopants [1] or electrochemical methods [2]. A more recent paper reported a diameter selective charge transfer in a dopant-intercalated SWCNT system [3]. By adding a pH-sensitive dopant, ferricyanide, in an aqueous solution of SDS micelleembedded individual SWCNTs, we show that we can reversibly control the electron Fermi level of isolated semiconducting SWCNTs and subsequently change their bandgap absorption.

Photocatalysis-induced selective decoration of semiconducting single walled carbon nanotubes: hole-doping effect.

We have examined the time-dependent effect of the titanium oxide photocatalysis on N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone individually dispersed single walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) suspensions. From optical spectroscopic studies, we found a selective decoration of the semiconducting tubes. Such selectivity is attributed to the preferential attack of the photogenerated active species on the hole-doped semicond...

Towards Efficient Carbon-Based Solar Cells

Our work in the last year focused on improving the sorting of semiconducting carbon nanotubes and the enhancement of the conductivity and transparency of carbon based electrodes. The active layer of our carbon solar cell is based on semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes; the highly selective sorting of small diameter carbon nanotube is essential for photovoltaic applications. Ideally, t...

Diameter-dependent solubility of single-walled carbon nanotubes.

We study the solubility and dispersibility of as-produced and purified HiPco single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Variation in specific operating conditions of the HiPco process are found to lead to significant differences in the respective SWNT solubilities in oleum and surfactant suspensions. The diameter distributions of SWNTs dispersed in surfactant solutions are batch-dependent, as evid...

Screening the missing electron: nanochemistry in action.

The excitement of nano-test-tube chemistry in a single-walled carbon nanotube is exemplified in our study on electron doping in carbon nanotubes. Electron doping through the 1D van Hove singularity of single-walled carbon nanotubes is realized via a chemical reaction of an encapsulated organocerium compound, CeCp3. The decomposition of CeCp3 inside the carbon nanotubes increases the doping leve...
